d’you want some cheese with that whine?

Posted March 12th, 2010 by Rachael and filed in Uncategorized

I could come on here and pretend everything is lovely and that I’ve had a fabulous week. But I’d be lying.

I’m only human. I’m a mother of four children, I’m self employed, and there isn’t enough of me to go round at the moment.
I’m fundraising like mad.
Oh yes, and I’m trying to persuade my reluctant body to run 26.2 miles.
And arranging a fundraising quiz night.
And sorting out a bake sale at school.
And trying to persuade people to give me prizes for a raffle.
And organising printed t-shirts for Marathon Day.
And doing a Body Shop/Phoenix Cards party.

This week has been hard. K, my husband, has been working away, and he’s not home until tonight. Then he’s working again tomorrow.

I had to tell no3′s teacher that it was my fault he hadn’t done his homework.
I had to tell no4′s teacher that he was wearing wellies to preschool because his shoes had disappeared in the chaos of our house.
I had to tell no2′s teacher that the printer wasn’t working and I couldn’t fix it, so his homework would have to wait till Daddy got home.
I had to tell no1 that the letter she absolutely must have back to school, Mummy, fell off the top of the microwave and caught fire on the hob.

The dog hasn’t been walked.
I impulse bought a new chicken (don’t ask) and the other two are being Mean Girls to her.
There is an ironing pile in the garage with clothes in it I dont even remember buying.
The allotment police are going to arrest us for neglect.
I owe about seven hundred emails.
I have done so little work that I’m probably going to get the elbow.

But you know what?
It’s Friday.
Saying all my troubles out loud doesn’t make them go away, but it makes them a little bit less scary.
It’s okay to have a bad week, isn’t it?

Tomorrow I’m going to put on my trainers, and go for a 15 mile run.
That’ll cheer me up.

(I’ve added a new comment system to the blog, so if you want to tell me how you plan to cheer yourself up this weekend, or if you want to make me smile, just click on the little ‘comments’ tag at the side there. Oh, and the comment seems to take a moment to appear, so don’t worry if it doesn’t turn up at first. Technology, eh? One of these days I’ll just leave a post it note on the blog and you can scribble on it instead.)

I just have a no1 and *most* of my weeks sound like that! (D is away a lot for work, too, but I actually prefer that because it just makes meals and laundry even easier. I expect I'd feel differently if I had no2, 3 and 4.) I just found some paperwork that had to go back to her school in September. Am madly fabricating an excuse to explain myself.

Confession: My dog never gets walked — I throw her in the back yard to exercise herself by chasing squirrels. Please don't send the golden retriever police after me.

I have no plans to cheer myself up over the weekend, but C's March break begins after today, so it'll be Lax Days R Us around here very soon. There, tales of my utter sloth should cheer you up. :-)

((hugs)). don't you just hate the fact that “when it rains, it pours”? your run tmrw will lift your spirits!!

  3. Angelhales says:

    Aww big hugs sweetie!

You are allowed a bad week, we all have them. And like they say, a problem shared is a problem halved! I'm sure having a run will make you feel better, I'm going to drag myself kicking and screaming to the gym tomorrow in prep for a bike ride Sunday morning ready for training!

    Have a good weekend :D

You have had a shocker haven't you? Enjoy your bath and spend Sunday in bed with books and tea refusing to leave your sanctuary… I never walk my dog either, maybe Linda, me and you can start a support group?

Don't be hard on yourself… what needs to get done will (pretty much) get done and what doesn't need should never have been asked in the first place.

Looks like we have even more in common then I thought. Hectic times abound for me too! And I'm planning on getting chickens this year (please don't tell me it's a bad idea).
What's cheering me up this weekend? My in-laws called two days ago to say they're driving to visit us tonight for a week or more. Two days ago. Did I mention that? And much as I love my in-laws (if I say it often enough it WILL come true) they drive me absolutely-bonkers and put tonnes of stress on me, my husband, and the kids. I just got a call from them. They're almost here but tired so they're stopping in a hotel tonight and driving on in the morning (nice and early they say so we won't have to “wait around” for them – un hunh) so that gives me a whole extra night to get the bathroom and guest room (otherwise known as the baby's room) clean! And tonight to get some work done that I wouldn't be able to with them here.

  6. The run tomorrow will sort you out! I did the London Marathon back in 2008 and it was one of the best things I ever did, the crowd are unbelieveable and really give you the motivation to keep going….Good Luck x

Oh that's lovely to hear! I've just been reading your blog and we've got more than the marathon in common – Twilight, Krispy Kreme and Doctor Who – oh, and Australia! I lived there as a child for a while and loved it!

Sorry you've had a bad week. I struggle to keep all of the balls in the air with two children so I've no idea what sort of madness double that must be. I do know all my *perfect, organised and calm* mummy friends went to the dogs after No3 so I imagine from 4 onwards it's a deepening of the hysteria?

My week was ridiculous too. A fundraising coffee morning on Friday for playschool which meant baking (not something I am any good at) etc. My oldest had a birthday party to go to on Friday too so I was in and out of the house constantly all day. Husband's ONE housework task of emptying the bin was not done all week so I went on housework strike on Thursday until it is done (he's still snoring away in bed now and I have been up for nearly 3 hours).

I don't know if it's like this in your house but my husband thinks since he is working and commuting etc that at the weekends he is qualified to do absolutely nothing while I continue to slave away at my 24/7 unpaid work and should do so with a good grace.

    Hi lovely,

I think four isn't that different to two, really – I mean it is, obviously, but I struggled with two. (Intelligent people will now ask why did keep going – answer: I kept thinking I'd get better at it!)

I'd love to say it was the same here, but Mr M is superdomesticated (shamingly so) and is very hands on with washing and stuff like that. He's crap at cleaning, but very tidy. I'm good at cleaning, but very untidy! However he's so knackered from working 80+ hours this week that he's just called to say he's locked the keys to his car in the boot. I'm feeling sorry for him now!

Ooh no, chickens are never a bad idea! I've been having a lovely time over at your blog – you write so beautifully, I could spend all day just reading it. However I think the children might object, so I'll read some more this afternoon.

So lovely to meet a kindred spirit – I love the blogworld for that!

The Bad Dog Walkers Club? I'm in!

Sunday is a lie in, followed by an afternoon with my lovely mummy. Have a good weekend! xxx

  12. Rachael says:

Thanks lovely – I feel so much better this morning, despite being woken by the children at HALF PAST FOUR. Argh.

Hope you're enjoying those endolphins (as we call them in our house) right now! xxx

  13. Rachael says:

Thanks Karyn, you're right. Nothing like a run to make life better! x

  14. Rachael says:

Am comforted to know you're a member of the crap dog walker club too. Some weeks we manage miles, others she just plays in the garden. There's a reason they call retrievers the lazy man's dog!

Hope March break brings a bit of springlike warmth and loveliness, and lots of wine fuelled chats for us on twitter!

  15. So not much to do then. Do you go to bed too?

Btw, I love the photos on your previous post, absolutely beautiful.

    CJ xx

I hope the run made it all go away, for a couple of hours anyway! Great to meet you over at CafeBebe. I ran the marathon in 2004 – my husband & I ran together & it was quite honestly one of the most incredible experiences of my life. As others have said before me, the crowd are amazing – have your name on your shirt & their support literally carries your legs along the route & over the line. Good luck!

  17. You've got an awful lot going on there – be kind to yourself x

And I wanted to test out your new commenting thing :D

  18. oohh your comments are a long way down the page!!!! Is that something you can fix x

  19. Rachael says:

Thanks Nickie! After the marathon I intend to do nothing for a week!

  20. Mindful Mum says:

I hope you had loads of cheese and a real wine. In part because you deserved it and partially because I can't have it at the moment as I'm 'Keith Cheggers' with twins. As for the exercise, well I'm contemplating pregnancy yoga, because it always made me feel so better when I was pregnant with my first child.

I'm a list girl. Not that I manage to tick everything off. I simply transfer uncompleted tasks to a fresh list with new tasks. On Friday I lost my list book and that was distressing!

Some weeks I get nothing achieved – so yes definitely okay to have a bad week.
