I had a dream

Yes, I know, you’ve heard it all before.

But I really did have a dream about this, and it was so clear, and so real, that I knew I had to act on it.

I dreamt I was halfway through the marathon, and feeling tired. I looked down and there was a list of 26 names inked on my arm in black marker pen, and I ran each mile for somebody special.

So this is where you come in.

My friend Sarah lost her mum 9 months after my dad died. She, too, was far too young. So Sarah has sponsored mile 2, and I’ll be running that mile thinking of Jenny Cassidy, of my lovely friend and her seven children, and I’ll be running it as hard as I can.

I’m not asking for a fortune for Heart Research UK, just a donation – tell me who you want me to run for, and why. If you want me to tell your story on here, I’ll publish it. If you’d rather stay private, that’s okay too. On marathon day you can log in with my competitor number and track my progress online.

I have 26.2 miles to run.

I want to share this marathon with you.

That is such a great idea!

  2. hey amazing lady. just sponsored you. Sorry it's not much but every little helps and all that! If you could add my beautiful Grandma Rose to your arm I'd really appreciate it. She unfortunately died of a heart attack back in 2003 and I still miss her every day :-(

Just say the word and you can be no.3 – you've already donated so you've got a space on my arm!

(Slight technical hitch: used washable marker thinking it would just wipe off. Have been walking around all day like a mad person with things written all over my arm.)

Thank you so much! And every single donation means just as much to me. I would be proud to make your Grandma Rose my inspiration for mile 3 of the marathon. Oh dear, I feel more sniffling coming on. I'm going to cry all the way round, aren't I?

  5. You probably will cry some of the way round!! I cried every time I saw my Mum who was at miles 7, 13, 21 & 26!!!! That's a lot of tears when you need to conserve energy ;-)

  6. Rachael says:

Hahahaha! Yes, I better watch it or I'll be having to rehydrate for tear loss as well as sweat!

I wouldn't want to take up space anyone else needs more, but a positive heart story is my sister Alice who was born with a serious defect and survived a major operation at 3 months. She's in her 30s now. Maybe you could run a mile for Edinburgh's Sick Children's Hospital that saved her life.

I would be proud to do it, and it's a wonderful reason to run a mile. It's thanks to charities like Heart Research UK that operations like that happen and people go on to live healthy lives, and it's a lovely, positive story. Edinburgh Sick Kids is such an amazing place.

    Rachael, what a fabulous idea.

You know my story and even though my dad died 34 years ago at a very young age, I would be honoured if you could run a mile for Billy. He is never forgotten. Ever.

Darling, I'll get round to giving you money, I'd love it if you could run a mile for My Dad, it'll be 20yrs on the 29th of March. I cry every time I read your tribute to your Dad, it's sharing the little things you miss and the big anniversaries, I wish he had met my beautiful children,…

    Hi Anne Marie,

Of course I'll run for your dad. I'd be proud to! Look forward to seeing you on marathon day, if you can make it!

  14. Rachael says:
